Orpiment and Realgar

Orpiment and Realgar

Nye County, Nevada

Orpiment and realgar are very similar minerals and both are arsenic sulfides, making them brilliant, yet toxic, minerals. Orpiment (yellow) was used for its pigment for hundreds of years until its toxicity was discovered. Realgar (red) contains slight traces of arsenic and was used as a rat poison. If these things don’t sell this stone, we don’t know what will!

Occurs in volcanic hot springs and low-temperature hydrothermal veins.

Seriously though, it’s a very cool addition to any collection!
